Kaysersberg is a small town located between Riquewihr and Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin department, in the Alsatian region. It is generally considered one of the most impressive towns in Alsace, particularly in its medieval center.
The town is located in a very picturesque setting, in a valley surrounded by vineyards and with wooded hills rising above the town. As soon as you enter Kaysersberg you find the beautiful main square which is surrounded by many buildings with painted half-timberings, and a very pleasant main street.
Kaysersberg Castle:
When you walk down the main street and reach the river, that’s when the town really becomes beautiful. Along the banks of the river there are many brightly painted half-timbered houses, and the river Weiss is crossed by a lovely fortified stone bridge from the 16th century, which further adds to the charm of the picture.
Here is a list of the best places to visit in Kaysersberg:
An ancient city of the Holy Roman Empire, Kaysersberg has an imperial castle. Built around 1200 to form a barrier to roads coming from Lorraine, the village was an important strategic site in the war between the Holy Roman Empire and the Dukes of Lorraine. An enormous cylindrical dungeon, one of the oldest circular dungeons in Alsace, is a real curiosity in itself with its walls more than 4 m thick. Inside the wall, protected by the keep, you can admire the manor with its Gothic art windows. But above all, don’t forget to enjoy the magnificent view. Take the 100-step staircase to the top of the keep for a splendid panorama of Kaysersberg.
The Kaysersberg Historical Museum:
The Kaysersberg historical museum is located in the eponymous village, integrated since 2016 into the commune of Kaysersberg Vignoble, in Haut-Rhin, 12 km northwest of Colmar.
In the heart of traditional and tourist Alsace, between castles and vineyards, the establishment is located on the first floor of a 16th century noble house (listed in the Inventory) which is already as such representative of the architecture civil society in the region at that time.
The collections presented to the public are devoted to religious art but also to popular traditions from past centuries.
We thus discover a set of polychrome statues dating from the 14th to the 18th century, including a rare “opening” Virgin from the 14th century (according to a medieval technique, the statue is equipped with an opening device revealing a religious scene). A magnificent Palm Sunday Christ is also to be seen.
In another register, the background also contains a set of axes dating from the Neolithic period, Roman tools, precious or unusual handicraft objects (host or waffle molds and irons, locks, firebacks typical of the Alsatian region), and traditional furniture.
In an exceptional setting, the museum allows you to delve into a past punctuated with artistic wonders
